Introduction.

Most of the confusion regarding the cleaning of rugs results from the common use of term ‘Oriental rug’ as a general label for any variety of patterned carpeting. Department stores, carpet shops, some large DIY stores sell a constantly changing mix of machine-made and hand-made rugs which they often lump together and advertise as ‘Oriental rugs’. Often the salesperson in such a store has little or no knowledge about hand-knotted rugs, and does not clearly distinguish among the machine-made copies and the genuine Oriental rugs in his stock.

For most dealers in genuine Oriental rugs, an "Oriental rug" is a piled or flatwoven fabric hand-knotted in one of the traditional weaving areas of the Middle or Far East. true Oriental rugs come from Afghanistan, China, India, Iran, Nepal, Pakistan, Tibet, Turkey, some of the territories of the old Soviet Union (like Azerbaijan or Armenia), Balkan countries like Romania and Albania, and some North African countries like Morocco and Egypt. Genuine Oriental rugs are not made in Belgium or anywhere else in Western Europe or in the United States.

Most carpet cleaner consider rugs to be just large squares of carpet, and clean them as such, but as Hull & Yorkshires premier cleaning consultant we understand that rug cleaning is a specialist service with its own unique science.

The first step in cleaning any rug is the correct identification of make and fibre. We understand that most rugs are generic wool bought from local department stores or carpet shops which are valued at between £150 & £500, these rugs make up 90% of rugs found in peoples homes. We can clean these rugs in-situ at your home or bring them to our factory unit to be cleaned.

More specialised or valuable rugs are usually taken away to our Beverley factory so they can be cleaned (and more importantly) dried in a more controlled environment.
